Jaco, Costa Rica – June 2023

A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to get to travel to Costa Rica with work – specifically to attend a conference on digital rights that was taking place in San José. You can’t really fly all that way from Scotland and not see the sea though, so myself and a few other colleagues decided to head out early on our own dime for a couple of days in the sun.

Our chosen destination was Jaco – the closest ‘nice’ beach to the country’s capital city, which is about two hours away by bus. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to soak up any vitamin D, and so I was going to take full advantage of the opportunity. Cocktails by the pool and questionable DIY cuttings of lime for smuggled bottles of tequila. Yes please.

We were staying at a hostel from a chain called Selina. I had never heard of them before, but they apparently have locations all over the world. They are one of those more contemporary hostels that provide nicer rooms for those middle class ‘digital nomad’ style wankers travellers like yours truly.

We just so happened to be there over the full moon, which meant a full moon party. This was far less wild than you might imagine, though there were fire dancers which was pretty impressive. Even more impressive when they accidentally let go of one of the flaming torches and almost set one of our group alight.

We only really had one full day in Jaco, and so there wasn’t much time to explore, and to be fair I was mostly intent on lying next to the pool. It allowed for some much needed relaxation… though I was enraged to discover that the weather back in Scotland was scorching hot. Typical.
